Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the Costs Associated with the Name Change?

The cost is manageable and can be integrated into normal budget cycles

  • The estimated cost of the name change to the Township is less than $150,000

  • By setting the effective date as January 1, 2028, many uniforms, vehicles, and signage will be replaced through normal attrition, reducing estimated expenses

  • This approach ensures fiscal responsibility while still moving our community forward

How Will This Affect My Address?

Changing the name to Oak Hills will NOT change your U.S. Postal address

  • If a majority of the voters approve of the change to Oak Hills, the Township Trustees must still approve the name change

  • The vote in November and the approval of the Trustees will be the start of a process to encourage the U.S. Postal Service to change the name of our Post Office and change the name of our 7 ZIP codes with 4 different names, all to Oak Hills

  • A new name will coalesce our community around a new brand, improving community pride and esprit de corps

How Will This Affect My Taxes?

Changing the name to Oak Hills will NOT increase your taxes

  • The Michigan Township form of government is not changing. Oak Hills Charter Township will still be governed by all of the laws and regulations and procedures that are now followed by our elected officials.

  • All current elected officials will remain in office. All commissions and committees will remain in place. All employees will continue working. Only the name changes to Oak Hills.

  • The tax base for the Township is shrinking. Changing the name will encourage businesses to consider locating in Oak Hills and existing businesses to grow, expanding the tax base with the possibility of reducing property taxes.
